Mastectomy Reconstruction

For reconstruction after mastectomy, it should first be known that you must be well enough to undergo a general anesthetic.

There are two time-frame options for reconstruction after mastectomy:

  • Immediate Reconstruction:

Reconstruction is performed at the same time as your mastectomy. There are certain conditions that you must meet to be the ideal candidate for immediate reconstruction.

  • Delayed Reconstruction:

Reconstruction is performed months to years after mastectomy. This timeframe is seen more commonly in breast cancer reconstructions.

Types of Reconstruction:

Implant-based

This type of reconstruction involves the use of either a silicone or a saline implant to rebuild the breast. This is the more common type of breast reconstruction. There are also two different stages for implant-based reconstruction.

Tissue-based

This type of reconstruction uses tissue from another part of your body (called “flaps”) to recreate your breast. While this type of reconstruction is less common, there are still multiple different “flaps” that can be used for the new breast tissue.

This decision is discussed with your breast cancer team to determine which option best fits you.
